A T Rex in South Florida

Several years ago I took a research trip to Homestead to visit the Biscayne National Park for my Kurt Hunter series. The Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant doesn’t crack the top ten for places to visit, but it has some interesting features.

Located directly on Biscayne Bay the plant has a direct impact on the park. As far as locations are concerned with the miles-long cooling canal system that has become a habitat for the threatened American Crocodile, and its own marked channel and dock, the facility provides plenty of opportunity for nefarious activity.

Surprisingly there is little security there. I was able to drive in and tour the property, reaching the back storage yard where I saw the T-Rex.

Rosie as the twenty-eight foot steel, stucco, and aluminum replica was named guarded the entrance to the plant starting a year after its opening in 1967. Rosie has recently been retired and is now outside the South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach.
